by Jean , In reading Thomas Paine and other writings of our founders, I have begun to be reasonably sure that what they meant by religious freedom was to be any denomination of Christian. It never was considered that an American would want to be anything other than a Christian but they might very well want to be something other than an Anglican. I certainly cannot see how constitutionally one's religion could be protected if it promoted violence and overthrow of the government or the other people or its laws.
